First puppy vet visit: what to arrange and bring

Gather records, explain your questions and confirm the clinic’s arrival instructions.

Call with the puppy’s actual history

Tell the practice your puppy’s age, where they came from and whether you have previous records. Explain the reason for booking so reception can arrange the appropriate appointment. Ask which documents or samples the team wants and how they should be brought.

Put the records in one place

Gather adoption or breeder paperwork, previous veterinary notes and vaccination records. Include the names of any current products or medicines and the food you use. Ask a previous practice to transfer records if needed. Make a short list of questions so you can use the appointment well.

Confirm how to arrive

Ask about check-in, keeping the puppy secure and where to wait. Bring a suitable carrier or leash and follow the practice’s instructions for contact with other animals. Tell staff beforehand if travel or handling is difficult. Ask the veterinary team to set the appropriate visit schedule for your puppy.

Leave with a clear next step

Before paying, ask for the written visit summary, any instructions and the timing of the next appointment. Check which contact number to use for follow-up questions. Keep the paperwork with the puppy’s records so another caregiver can find it.
